Hendra Virus

Hendra Virus is a fatal disease affecting both horses and humans, first discovered in Mackay in 1994. It is naturally carried by flying foxes and can be transmitted to horses through saliva, urine, faeces, or foetal fluids. Horses can spread the virus before symptoms appear, and humans become infected through close contact with infected horse fluids.

Thankfully, a vaccine is available for horses to prevent the spread of Hendra Virus. The vaccine is given in two doses, 21 days apart, starting at 4-6 months of age, with annual boosters. Horses must be microchipped, and vaccination details are recorded in a central database. The vaccine is safe for pregnant horses.

For safety, we can only treat vaccinated horses. If your horse has been vaccinated elsewhere, we can verify its status online or through a vaccination certificate. To schedule a vaccination, contact us at (07) 4914 2404. Vaccinations can be done on your property or at our surgery.
