Parasites

Heartworm

Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes, and pets don’t need to be in contact with other animals to get infected. It can cause heart failure, but is preventable with injections, monthly tablets, or spot-on treatments. A heartworm test is recommended before starting prevention.

Intestinal Worms

Common intestinal worms, like roundworms and tapeworms, can cause weight loss, vomiting, and even death. Regular worming is essential, as some worms can also affect humans, especially children. Flea prevention helps control tapeworms.

Flea Prevention

Fleas multiply quickly, and prevention is key to breaking the lifecycle. Monthly treatments are recommended for your pet’s comfort and health.

Tick Prevention

Ticks, especially paralysis ticks, can cause severe illness or death. Regular tick prevention is vital for your pet’s safety, especially in areas where ticks are prevalent.

Snake Bites & Your Pet

Snake bites are more common in summer, especially in areas like Mackay and Walkerston District, with brown snakes being a frequent cause. If you suspect a bite, keep your pet calm and get them to a vet immediately. Time is critical.

Signs of Snake Bite

Symptoms vary but may include weakness, shaking, vomiting, dilated pupils, blood in urine, and paralysis. The closer the bite is to the heart, the quicker the venom spreads.

Veterinary Treatment

Treatment involves fluids, antivenom, and sometimes oxygen support. Quick treatment improves survival chances (about 80%). Antivenom neutralises venom but does not protect against future bites.

Recovery

Most pets recover in 24-48 hours with prompt care, but some may need prolonged care due to organ damage.

Precautions

Use a leash during walks, keep yards clear of long grass, and remove rubbish to minimise snake-friendly hiding spots. Contact a snake catcher for safe removal if needed.

Tick Paralysis

The Australian Paralysis Tick (Ixodes holocyclus) injects a neurotoxin into pets, causing paralysis and potentially death. Common in Mackay from September to February, tick paralysis can be treated if caught early.

Tick Description

The female tick, starting yellowish and turning greyish with a brown shield-like mark, can grow up to 18mm when engorged.

Signs of Tick Paralysis

  • Weakness in back legs, progressing to paralysis
  • Grunting or labored breathing
  • Vomiting/gagging
  • Change of voice
  • Glazed eyes

Any combination of these symptoms should be taken seriously.

What to Do if You Find a Tick

Remove the tick carefully with tweezers or fingernails. If unsure, contact us for assistance. Do not use irritants like kerosene or turps. If no symptoms are present, monitor your pet closely or bring them in for a checkup. For symptoms, seek immediate veterinary care.

Treatment

Treatment involves Tick Antiserum and hospitalization. Oxygen therapy may also be required. Recovery depends on how quickly the condition is treated.

Aftercare

Confine your pet to a quiet, cool space for 3-4 days post-treatment. Report any signs of deterioration.
